

The cutter Bedouin was designed by English designer John Harvey in 1881, and built at City Island, NY that winter. According to The History of American Sailing Ships by Howard Chapelle, "she had the reefing bowsprit and mainmast placed well aft, typical of the English practice."According to Americascup.com, Bedouin lost to Puritan in the selection trials to defend the fifth America's Cup in 1885. It was designed by John Harvey. According to the website:
"Puritan was easily leading in the American defender selection trials against Priscilla, Cary Smith's traditional sloop, drawn in 1885 at the request of the NYYC, Bedouin, an "American" cutter ordered in 1882 and Gracie, the old sloop modeled in 1868 by Abraham A. Schank."
