

The1896 List of Merchant Sailing Vessels of the United States notes that Carmita was a 53'6" sloop built in 1893 in South Boston, Mass. Its homeport was listed in 1896 as New York City.
According to Outing magazine, Carmita was a sloop class J . The August 1897 edition of Outing states: "Carmita, a Boston boat ... was designed by Mr. Waterhouse, and built by Lawley & Son in 1893. She has always been reckoned a slow coach. She is now owned by Mr. W. K. Vanderbilt, Jr."
