Gloriana was designed and built in 1891 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.Howard Chapelle notes in his book The History of American Sailing Ships: "The Herreshoff shops in Bristol, Rhode Island, turned out a new sloop, or rather cutter, that year for the class. While building she was much ridiculed, but after her launch she became a sensation. This yacht was the Gloriana, a beautifully modelled cutter of moderate power and a much cut-a-way profile. In cutting away the forefoot the overhang of the bow was much lengthened as compared to contemporary yachts. The shorter waterline thus obtained in this design permitted an increase of sail under the rule, which accounted for some of her speed, good hull lines accounting for the rest. However, her speed was attributed to her bow, as in the case of America, and the 'Gloriana-bow' was tacked onto everything, including Cape Cats. The Herreshoffs, however, had discovered the weakness of the rule; a big boat could be produced on a short waterline, capable of carrying enough sail to beat a hull of normal type."
