The1896 List of Merchant Sailing Vessels of the United States notes that the 52'1" composite sloop Harpoon was built in 1891 in Salem, Mass. Its homeport was listed as Boston. The 1906 Lloyd's Register lists Harpoon as a 61' wooden cutter, formerly Beatrix, designed by Edward Burgess and built by A. J. Frisbee of Salem, Mass. in 1891. Its owner in 1906 was listed as T. H. Shepard of Boston.
