Howard Chapelle notes in his book The History of American Sailing Ships that Liris was a 40' cutter designed by leading naval architect William Gardner, who also designed Atlantic, Kathleen, Alcea, Quisetta, Norota, Syce, and many others.) He writes that Liris "brought him much fame."

According to the May 1892 issue of Outing, Liris was owned by Messrs. Samuel Mather & C.W. Wetmore. According to the August 1896 issue of Outing magazine, Liris was owned by C. B. Hendricks.
