

Montauk, a centerboard schooner, was designed by Philip Ellsworth.
According to www.by-the-sea.com, Montauk was designed by Phil Ellsworth, built in 1882 by C & R Poillon Shipbuilders of Brooklyn, New York for John E. Brooks, and owned by S. R. Platt. It was launched at Gowanus Yard. Montauk was a centerboard schooner yacht measuring 103 ft, 92 Tons, with a 94 ft waterline. It had a long racing career.
James McQuade wrote a book titled The Cruise of the Montauk to Bermuda, The West Indies and Florida. (New York, Thomas R. Knox, 1885.) McLaren Books calls it "a scarce account of a two and a half month 1884 cruise in the auxiliary steam-powered schooner yacht 'Montauk', owned by Rear-Commodore S. R. Platt of the New York Yacht Club."
