According to the article "The House of Wood" by Tom Nye featured in the Summer 2006 issue of Restoration Quarterly magazine, the cutter Norota was built by Benjamin Franklin “B.F.” Wood from the designs of William Gardner at the Wood Yacht Yard at City Island, NY.

According to the August 1896 issue of Outing magazine, Norota was owned by F. M. Hoyt.

According to the July 8, 1940 issue of the New York Times, Frederick M. Hoyt (1873-1940) was the owner of the racing yachts Norota, Syce and Isol, and became commodore of the Larchmont Yacht Club in 1901. Hoyt and his wife, Jane Ferby Hoyt, were survivors of the Titanic disaster.

Tom Nye writes us that Norota was built in 1895. He adds:

"NOROTA - Wood / Keel Cutter - L.O.A.: 54'7" x L.W.L.: 34'6" x Beam: 10'8" x Draft: 7'8"
Designer: William Gardner - Builder: B. F. Wood, City Island - Owner: Frederic M. Hoyt, Stamford Yacht Club
First in a number of boats built for F. M. Hoyt, in its first season Norota over twenty races came in first fourteen times. F.M. Hoyt would go on to become a successful yacht designer himself."
