The American Yacht List, 1890-1, lists Sapphire as a "Screw Steamer", 135' long, designed by Edward Burgess and built by New England Ship Building Co. in Bath, Maine, for owner Amzi L. Barber of the New York Yacht Club. It was launched in 1888, and it's 1890 home port was listed as New York.

From the 1895 List of Merchant Vessels of the United States:

Sapphire, official number 116223, call letters K.H.N.V, built 1888 at Bath, Maine, home port at Philadelphia, Pa. 120.28 gross tons, 60.14 net tons, 118.3 feet in length, 19.4 feet in beam, 10.2 feet in depth of hold, 300 estimated nominal horsepower.

According to the December 1899 issue of Outing magazine, steam yacht Sapphire was owned by Amzi L. Barber.

Amzi L. Barber was one of the founders of Howard University, and the developer of LeDroit Park in Washington, D.C., an (ironically) whites-only residential area, that was the focus of an African American protest in 1888. Barber was also the founder of the Locomobile Company of America, which produced steam-powered automobiles.
