The 186' long Sultana was built in 1889 by Henderson and Robbins at Erie Basin, NY. In 1917 it was owned by Mrs. E. H. Harriman of New York City.
From 1917 until 1919 it served in World War I as the patrol yacht USS Sultana (SP134). During its service it was used to rescue 45 survivors of the Orleans which had been torpedoed.
