Wasp was a 45' cutter built by the Herreshoff Company for owner Archibald Rogers in 1892. According to the August 1896 issue of Outing magazine, Wasp was owned by H. Lippitt.
Robert Carrick writes in The Pictoral History of the America's Cup Races, Wasp "measured 72 feet over-all and only 46 on the waterline. [Wasp and Gloriana] were among the first 'rule-beaters' or 'racing machines' which reached their extreme development in the Cup boats ten years later."
The paddlewheel steamer General Slocum appears in the background of photograph #18, just to the left of Wasp. According to Wikipedia, the steamer was "launched in 1891. It caught fire and burned to the water line in New York's East River on June 15, 1904. More than 1,000 people died in the accident, making it New York City's worst loss-of-life disaster until the September 11, 2001 attacks." For more information on the General Slocum, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Slocum.
